Did You Know?
- Fall tourism can increase traffic and hotel occupancy in popular foliage destinations, potentially changing exposure for auto, travel, and property insurers.
- Leaves don’t “turn” orange and yellow. Those pigments are already in the leaves, but they become visible when green chlorophyll breaks down as days get shorter.
- Fallen leaves release various organic compounds as they break down, contributing to that distinctive earthy fall smell.
- Autumn can affect auto claims. Shorter daylight hours, wet leaves, fog, and earlier darkness can increase driving hazards, making seasonal patterns relevant to claims analysis.
- Fire risk can change in the fall. As temperatures drop, households begin using fireplaces, furnaces, and other heating equipment more frequently.
- Fall foliage is influenced by weather. Bright sunny days and cool (but not freezing) nights can help produce particularly vivid red colors.
- Pumpkin carving isn’t risk-free. Hand injuries from carving pumpkins are a recurring seasonal source of insurance claims.

DW Simpson Book Club
Design Your Future with the Competency Framework
by Richard Junker & Curtis Lee Robbins
This summer, DW Simpson hosted a virtual Book Club and focus group with Curtis Lee Robbins and Richard Junker, authors of Design Your Future with the Competency Framework. This fun and engaging group brought together participants from around the world, ranging from Chief Actuaries and other experienced professionals to actuarial students and aspiring actuaries. The mix of career stages, backgrounds and experiences led to thoughtful conversations and a variety of perspectives.
As one participant shared: “Please continue educating people and companies on the Competency Framework. This is a critical resource for many people, especially as they take up managerial positions.”

The Limitations of AI for Specialized Searches, and Why Human Connection Matters
AI is changing the way companies search for talent, but when it comes to highly specialized actuarial roles, it is limited. The right candidate isn’t always the one who matches the most keywords, and understanding the nuances of the actuarial market, recognizing transferable expertise, and building meaningful relationships still requires a human touch.
In our recent blog, we explore where AI-powered searches can fall short and why the combination of technology, industry expertise, and human connection remains essential to finding the right talent.
