In the current market, actuaries have many options for new opportunities. You may see a job description that seems like the perfect fit, but being offered that role requires more than a strong résumé. Employers are also looking for people who can communicate well, work with others, understand the business, adapt to change, and explain their decision-making process. An interview is your one chance to show not just what you know, but how you approach problems and what you would be like to work with on a day-to-day basis. Here are some tips for making sure you stand out in the interview process.
Research the Company and Role Before the Interview
Before the interview you need to take some time to learn about the company, the role, the team, and the type of work you would be doing. Look into what the company does, who its customers are, what kinds of risks it manages, and what’s happening in the business. The more you understand, the easier it will be to connect your own experience to what the company needs, and the more thoughtful questions you’ll be able to ask.
Focus on Accomplishments, Not Just Responsibilities
When talking about your experience, focus on your accomplishments. Saying “I worked on reserving” doesn’t tell an interviewer very much. Instead, explain what you did, why it mattered, and what came out of it. Maybe you found an unusual trend, automated a repetitive task, improved a report, or helped senior management make a decision. The goal is to show that you can take actuarial analysis to the next level.
Prepare Strong Stories for Behavioral Questions
You should also expect behavioral questions, so be ready for questions about teamwork, difficult situations, mistakes, feedback, competing deadlines, or explaining technical information to someone without an actuarial background. Having a few stories prepared ahead of time can make these questions much easier. The STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, and Result—is a simple way to organize your answers. Just remember to spend most of your time talking about what you did and what happened as a result.
Show How You Think Through Technical Problems
When it comes to technical questions, don’t treat the interview like an actuarial exam. Interviewers are interested in how you think through a problem, not just whether you know the exact formula. If you don’t know something, don’t panic. Talk through your approach, explain what information you would review, and describe how you would reach a conclusion. Showing that you can reason through an unfamiliar problem is far more valuable than trying to guess an answer.
Connect Your Analysis to Business Decisions
It’s also important to connect the numbers to the bigger picture. A good actuary doesn’t just ask, “What does the model say?” They also ask, “So what does this mean for the business?” If projected losses suddenly increase, for example, you might look at the quality of the data, the assumptions behind the model, recent experience, and how significant the change really is.
Make a Strong Impression in Video Interviews
If your interview is over video, take a few extra minutes to get your setup right. Test your camera, microphone, internet connection, and interview platform ahead of time. Find a quiet place, make sure your face is well lit, and position the camera around eye level. During the interview, try to look toward the camera when you’re speaking, sit up straight, and stay engaged. It’s fine to keep a few notes nearby, but don’t turn them into a script.
Approach On-Site Interviews with Professionalism
For an on-site interview, remember that the interview starts before you sit down with the hiring manager. You may meet future teammates, recruiters, managers, or executives, and each person may be looking for something different. Be professional and friendly throughout the day, including during casual conversations, office tours, or lunch. Arrive early and bring a few copies of your résumé, a notebook, and your questions. Make sure to say hello and be polite to everyone you encounter.
Ask Thoughtful Questions That Demonstrate Your Interest
And don’t forget about preparing your own questions. Instead of asking “What’s a typical day like?” or “What are the benefits?”, ask questions that show you’re genuinely interested in the work. You could ask about the team’s priorities, how actuaries work with other departments, how technology is changing the team’s work, or what makes someone successful in the role. The best questions are usually ones that build on something you learned during your research or something the interviewer mentioned.
Highlight Your Technology Skills and Ability to Adapt
Technology and data skills are becoming increasingly important, so be ready to talk about tools such as Excel, SQL, Python, R, SAS, or actuarial modeling software. But don’t just list the tools you know. Explain how you used them to solve a problem, improve a process, or save time. At the same time, show that you’re comfortable learning new things. Actuarial work continues to evolve, and employers want people who can pick up new tools, handle unfamiliar assignments, respond to changing circumstances, and learn from feedback.
Remember That You’re Evaluating the Company Too
Finally, remember that the interview goes both ways. The company is deciding whether you’re a good fit, but you’re also deciding whether the company is right for you. Think about the team’s management style, opportunities for development, support for actuarial exams, career progression, collaboration, and work expectations. After the interview, send a short thank-you message, ideally mentioning something specific from your conversations. It’s a simple way to show professionalism and reinforce your interest.
Show Why You’re the Right Person for the Team
At the end of the day, a great actuarial interview is about showing that you can think through problems, communicate clearly, work with others, understand the business, use data and technology effectively, and keep learning. Whether you’re sitting across the table from an interviewer or talking through a webcam, the goal is the same: show them that you can turn analysis into useful insight, and that you’re someone they’ll want on their team.
